TheaterWorks New Productions

TheaterWorks, the professional regional theater in Downtown Hartford, has staged one of the most significant coups in recent regional theater history.

The company, founded in 1985 by Hartford-native Steve Campo, will open its upcoming 2011-2012 Season with the American Regional Theater Premiere of one of the biggest recent hits to play on Broadway, The Motherf----r With the Hat, by Stephen Adly Guirgis.

This Tony Award nominated comedy, to be staged by acclaimed director Tazewell
Thompson, will run October 14 through December 4, 2011. The Motherf----r With the Hat will be followed by one of the strongest line-ups in TheaterWorks’ 26-year history.

The African-American family drama, The Sty of the Blind Pig, by Philip Hayes Dean, will run January 20 through February 26, 2012. In 1971 The Sty of the Blind Pig was honored by Time Magazine as one of the year’s ten best plays, while its author, Philip Hayes Dean, was winner of the Drama Desk Award for Most Promising Playwright. Dean is perhaps best known for his tour-de-force, Paul Robeson, seen at TheaterWorks several seasons ago.  TheaterWorks’ production of The Sty of the Blind Pig will be directed by Tazewell Thompson.

Winner of the Tony Award for Best Play, Red, by John Logan, will be presented March 23 through May 13, 2012.  Red, which will be staged by Tazewell Thompson, in fact captured six Tony Awards, including Best Play. It also won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play, the Drama League Award, and the Outer Circle Critics Award for Best New Broadway Play.

Time Stands Still, by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Donald Margulies, will be presented June 1 through July 15, 2012. TheaterWorks’ Senior Artistic Associate Rob Ruggiero will direct this Tony Award Nominee.

Neil LaBute’s comic exploration of America's obsession with physical beauty, Reasons To
Be Pretty, concludes TheaterWorks’ 2011-2012 season, in a production directed by Rob
Ruggiero. This Tony Award Nominee runs August 10 through September 30, 2012
