cityofangels_.jpg - 27.25 Kb   East Haddam, Conn., AUGUST 15, 2011: Goodspeed Musicals delves into the sultry and shadowy world of 1940s
    film noir with their clever
production of City of Angels. Promising lots of laughs and plenty of jazzy tunes, this witty musical comedy will run
from September 23 –   November  27 at the Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam, Conn. City of Angels will be
sponsored by Liberty Bank and Connecticut Light &  Power. [Official Press Opening will be October 19, 2011]

Swinging, sexy, smart, and funny! An ingenious spoof of 1940s Hollywood and whodunit films with side-by-side stories about the “real” world of a detective fiction writer and the “reel” world of his fictional gumshoe hero. One balances romance and rewrites, while the other slinks through a film noir netherworld of thugs and femmes fatales. Winner of tons of Tony Awards, it’s a witty detective thriller with a jazzy score that really kills.

Background: City of Angels was produced on Broadway at the Virginia Theatre. Opening on December 1, 1989, the show played until January 19, 1992, running for 879 performances. The original Broadway cast featured Gregg Edelman as Stine, James Naughton as Stone, Randy Graff as Oolie/Donna, and Dee Hoty as Aulora Kingsley/Carla Haywood. It was nominated for a remarkable 11 Tony Awards and won 6 including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Original Score. City of Angels opened in London’s West End at the Prince of Wales Theatre in 1993.

Synopsis:  City of Angels follows Stine, a best-selling hardboiled crime novelist who is in the midst of adapting one of his books into the next Hollywood blockbuster. As Stine’s story unfolds on stage, so does his screenplay about super sleuth Stone. With every stroke of Stine’s typewriter keys his hero’s world comes to life before the audience’s eyes – rewinding and fast-forwarding the action as Stine works through his writer’s block.
